Colorectal prevention: guidance in Santiago
Colorectal prevention means knowing your risk factors, recognising warning signs and having the screening tests that suit your age and family history. At the practice of Dr. Rebeca De León, a gastroenterologist and endoscopist, you are guided on which test fits you and when.

What raises the risk?
A family history of colorectal cancer or polyps, age, long-standing inflammatory bowel disease, and habits such as smoking, inactivity, obesity and a low-fibre diet.
Warning signs
Blood in the stool, lasting changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain that does not go away, unexplained weight loss and anaemia with no clear cause. If you have any of them, do not wait to see a doctor.
Screening tests
Depending on age and history, a faecal occult blood test or a colonoscopy may be advised; a colonoscopy lets the colon be examined and polyps removed during the same procedure. The doctor decides which one applies to you and at what age to start.
